First, why do you even need a morning routine?! A morning routine is yours and only yours. It should be set and scheduled around fueling your soul, diving in to positivity, and setting yourself up to receive gifts God has planned for you.
It is the first step in managing the emotions of your day. You can literally decide if you are going to be happy, scared, joyful, or full of fear. Really, you can manage these emotions in your morning routine. Not to mention, the habits you create in the morning can catapult you toward your dreams and goals.
So now that we have established the WHY, let’s talk about the HOW, shall we.
- Choose a Timeframe! How long will your morning routine be?! We are talking a timeframe completely blocked out for YOU. Not for your email answering, not for you to scroll on social media and see what Susie did last night. What does your schedule permit?! 15, 30 or 60 minutes? You will have to decide and you will have to decide based on what you want to accomplish each morning.
- Choose what you will do, choose what inspires you! Do daily devotionals inspire you? How about morning journaling and listing what you are grateful for? How about an inspiring book, morning tea, or meditating with essential oils in your diffuser? Is your ideal morning sipping a cup of adaptogen stress tea and highlighting verses in your bible?
Notice, I did not list checking email, checking social media, or reading blogs. If you are in to hearing spoken encouragement, you can always flip on a Podcast while you favorite essential oils are diffusing and sipping tea.
- Allow time for visualization! One of my most favorite things to do in the morning is visualize the future, my dreams, and my hopes. I sit in silence or sometimes guided by a guided meditation and I envision the future. What will 5 years, 10 years, or even 20 years look like for you?! The art of visualization and manifestation is such a major part of any morning routine.
My morning routine is fairly consistent each day. I wake up an hour before I would like to be ready for the gym. I use the YouVersion app to read daily devotionals that I have selected based on my desires. Some of my favorites are 30 Days to Greater Faith and The Proverbial Girl. I usually sip on peppermint tea or lavender tea and diffuse lavender or peppermint in the diffuser next to me. There are also essential oil blends with specific uses. I love Cheer Up Buttercup or Mental Focus from Now Essential Oils.
After my devotionals I pray by writing in a journal I use each morning to jot down prayers and gratitude. Finally, I am sure to visualize the future and my dreams for at least 10 – 15 minutes each morning. I make my breakfast and I get myself to the gym. It is a simple morning routine, for me anyways and I love the tone it sets for the day.
I used to wake up and first check my emails, check my social media, and wonder why my day was full of anxiety and fear. Setting a morning routine, without checking emails, checking social media, or replying to texts allows me to focus on setting the tone for the day.
The key to any morning routine is choosing a time frame and sticking to it. This means setting an alarm earlier and communicating with your family that the time between 5:00am and 5:30am is set for your morning routine, or whatever you decide as your morning routine timeframe. You will develop the best routine that suits you over time. It might be 10 minutes of visualization and 20 minutes of journaling. Whatever works for you is the best choice.
One final thought, stick to your routine at LEAST 21 days. You cannot expect for your morning routine to stick after 10 days. Give it time to work and give yourself time to customize it for yourself.
