Boosting Your Immune System Naturally

Elderberries have anti-inflammatory properties, so they can help with allergies and sinus infections too.
Elderberries have also been shown to shorten the duration of the flu, when taken at the onset of symptoms. It can provide symptom relief within 2-4 days. That’s amazing!! Elderberries are nature’s flu shot and Theraflu!
Where do You Find Elderberry Syrup?
I make our elderberry syrup easily in our Instant Pot, so I can control the ingredients. This recipe here shares my method for making my own elderberry syrup at home stovetop or Instant Pot. Making your syrup at home not only allows you the opportunity to control the flavor, but also the sweetness.
You can also find Elderberry syrup a the local health food store or you can also find quality syrup online. When choosing an elderberry syrup I recommend an organic option. Nature’s Answer has an organic elderberry syrup that does not have any alcohol or sweeteners here. Nature’s Way also has a Kids variety of the syrup that is sweetened with agave. When choosing a syrup for children, make sure the syrup does not contain honey if the child is under 1 year old.
Let’s Make Gummy Bears
Let’s face it, everything is a little better when it comes in the shape of a gummy bear. Making our own gummy version of elderberry syrup helps my little one enjoy his daily dose of immune support.
Vitamins are typically easier and more enjoyable to take when in a gummy form anyways.
When I created a recipe for elderberry gummies, I wanted be sure that there were additional benefits. My recipe includes tart cherry juice to ensure that these little gummies are packed full of additional benefits.
The Benefits of Tart Cherry
Tart cherry juice is is a good source of zinc and vitamin C, which increases these gummies ability to boost the immune system. Also, tart cherry juice has naturally occurring melatonin which may help you fall asleep and get better rest.
For sweetness and added anti-bacterial properties I added raw local honey to our gummies!
How to make gummy bears
These cute little gummy bear molds I found on Amazon here and I LOVE THEM!!! I was kind of worried that when I went to go take out the gummy bears that their little legs would stick to the mold and pull apart. NOPE, not the case! This set of gummy bear molds has 6 sheets for molds and came with two droppers. They are also BPA free! They were so easy to use.
What is agar-agar powder?
Finally, I added an option for both agar powder and gelatin in this recipe. You can choose one or the other depending on your preference. Agar is a plant based alternative to gelatin for those who are vegan or prefer a plant sourced option. Agar is a seaweed and has the same thickening property/texture as gelatin. Substitute equal measurements of whatever option you choose.
Make your own elderberry gummies
Making your own elderberry gummies is meant to be fun and enjoyable. It can be time consuming to make your own products, in this case gummies, but in the long run it is worth it. Taking the extra time to make your own elderberry gummies reduces your exposure to unnecessary toxins or chemicals.
Once you have made you gummies, you can enjoy a few daily during cold and flu season. If you feel like you are getting sick, increase your intake of gummies to 3-5 several times a day. I also recommend keeping homemade syrup on hand. Enjoy and well wishes to you this season!
