Beauty Isn’t Always Pain

We have both heard the “beauty is pain” phrase. I can’t decipher if that means that I should wear really uncomfortable shoes or if that means that I should have a facial cream that burns. Regardless of what the phrase actually means, I have this weird obsession with finding simple and affordable beauty tricks.

I am at that phase in life where age is beginning to show and kind of freaking me out. On the flip side I know that I am not even CLOSE to what is in store for me, you know? Like, I see the smile lines and frowny wrinkles, but they are at a point where I think I can take some preventative measures. It has prompted me to be a beauty research queen on Pinterest. 

Something I do know for sure is “you are what you eat” is a very true statement. So what if we ate foods for glowing, wrinkle-free skin? There has to be an “eat this, not that” list for beautiful skin, right? In all of my obsessive research, I found a few do’s and don’ts for us to start incorporating. 

  1. Do skip the sugary dessert! According to this source, Eating tons of sugar forms advanced glycation end products (commonly shortened, appropriately, to AGEs), which cause protein fibers in the body to become stiff and malformed. The proteins most prone to glycation are collagen and elastin ((the proteins that make your skin plump and springy.)) When those proteins hook up with renegade sugars, they become discolored, weak, and less supple; this shows up on the skin’s surface as wrinkles, sagginess and a loss of radiance.
    Instead add in more nutrient and antioxidant packed fruits. Berries, apples, bananas are all full of essential vitamins and nutrients. Not to mention, natures candy {aka fruit} is easier on your waist line!
     
  2. Do eat more fish and healthy fats! Healthy fats are key for glowing, hydrated skin.  Omega-3s turn down the dial on the production of inflammatory chemicals. Not a fan of fish? Try consuming coconut oil throughout the week. Coconut oil contains the antioxidant vitamin E. Vitamin E can protect your skin cells overtime.
  3. Do eat raw cacao! {Not cocoa, cacao} Cacao is not the same as cocoa as they are nutritionally more potent. I wrote this post sharing the beauty benefits of cacao  with an added recipe for you to try. In simple terms for today, cacao blocks harmful free radicals in the body. Cacao can also improve the skin’s complexion, repair skin cells, and protect our skin from premature aging.
  4. Do eat more spinach, broccoli, and kale! According to this source, green leafy vegetables like these are rich in alpha lipoic acid (ALA). Because of its high concentration of antioxidants that fight the free radicals that cause aging, ALA is one of the most powerful anti-aging agents available. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory, decreasing under-eye circles, puffiness, redness and blotches, all while minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.
  5. Do eat more raw superfoods! What are these superfoods you keep hearing about? Superfoods are nutrient dense foods that are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can boost collagen, brighten, and hydrate the skin. Strengthening and increasing collagen is a must if you are looking to combat cellulite and reverse the signs of aging. Some superfoods include gogi berries, cacao, maca root, turmeric, and chia seeds.

Okay, so now that you know which foods are beauty boosters, how do you get them in to your day-to-day? I discourage you from eating a tablespoon of maca root powder by itself. #gross! I especially think that a day filled with kale and salmon salads is boring.

I created this glowing skin smoothie that I drink just about everyday. The base of the smoothie is coconut water, which is literally natures gatorade, full of electrolytes, and perfect for hydration. I pack my smoothie full of superfoods and get my drink on! And let’s face it, smoothies are perfect for the busy gal! Throw everything in a blender and let’s hit the road!
